Ancient and medieval authors believed that the seven liberal arts were propaedeutic to the study of all topics and matters. Their belief remains evident in our school systems, as many universities and colleges focus on providing a liberal arts education. In fact, the Dedman College at Southern Methodist University mentions the importance of a liberal arts education in their mission statement, as it is the â€Å"essential preparation for life and career†. The understanding of the seven liberal arts inspires a broader and more focused study of materials often discussed in classes. Five of the seven liberal arts can be directly applied to the study of Rural Matters. An understanding of geometry, arithmetic, and astronomy is essential in gaining a deeper capacity for Rural Matters. Through Isidore of Seville’s Etymologies, we gain the understanding that without logic and grammar we would not be able to appropriately discuss rural matters. It is estimated that the total value of products from the entire Ayurvedic production in India is on the order of one billion dollars (U. S. ). The industry has been dominated by less than a dozen major companies for decades, joined recently by a few others that have followed their lead, so that there are today 30 companies doing a million dollars or more per year in business to meet the growing demand for Ayurvedic medicine. The products of these companies are included within the broad category of fast moving consumer goods (FMCG; which mainly involves foods, beverages, toiletries, cigarettes, etc. . Most of the larger Ayurvedic medicine suppliers provide materials other than Ayurvedic internal medicines, particularly in the areas of foods and toiletries (soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. ), where there may be some overlap with Ayurveda, such as having traditional herbal ingredients in the composition of toiletries. The key suppliers in Ayurveda are Dabur, Baidyanath, and Zandu, which together have about 85% of Indias domestic market. These and a handful of other companies are mentioned repeatedly by various writers about the Ayurvedic business in India. Several small companies that have grown rapidly in recent years envision themselves as primary players in the Ayurvedic market. The market for Ayurvedic internal medicines is dominated by Chyawanprash, an herbal honey comprised of about 3 dozen ingredients, with amla (emblic myrobalans) as the key ingredient. The leader in this field is Dabur, which had a 69% market share at the end of 2002; followed by Baidyanath, with nearly 11%, and Zandu and Himani (Emami Group) with about 7. 5% each. A variety of individual herbs, traditional formulations, and proprietary medicines make up the rest of the health products section involving internal remedies, while the remainder of the market is taken up by toothpastes and powders, skin creams, massage oils, shampoos, and other topical preparations. Two of the largest companies involved with providing traditional medicine products, such as the above, are Himalaya Drug Company and  Universal Medicaments. Exports of Ayurvedic medicines have reached a value of 100 million dollars a year (about 10% the value of the entire Ayurvedic industry in India). About 60% of this is crude herbs (to be manufactured into products outside India), about 30% is finished product shipped abroad for direct sales to consumers, and the remaining 10% is partially prepared products to be finished in the foreign countries. The Indian government and non-government organizations have been collecting statistics on the Ayurvedic system in India and these data about the manpower and institutional aspects of Ayurveda have emerged: * Number of registered medical practitioners: 366,812 * Number of dispensaries: 22,100 Number of hospitals: 2,189 * Number of hospital beds: 33,145 * Number of teaching institutions (undergraduate): 187 * Number of upgraded postgraduate departments: 51 * Number of specialties in postgraduate medical training: 16 * Number of pharmacies manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines: 8,400 In India, 60% of registered physicians are involved in non-allopathic systems of medicine. In addition to the nearly 400,000 Ayurvedic practitioners, there are o ver 170,000 homeopathic physicians; India has about 500,000 medical doctors (similar to the number in the U. S. , but serving nearly 4 times as many people). Reliance on Ayurvedic medicine is heavy in certain regions of India, such as Kerala in the Southwest. Many Ayurvedic practitioners in small villages are not registered. DISTRIBUTION NETWORK Company is having strong distribution network across the country. These distributors supply the stock to stockiest which in turn supply the product to the retailers. There is minimum one distributor in each state appointed by the company. Majority of them are with the firm since long time so they can support and help in launching of company’s new products. The company performs regular survey to keep a check on inventory levels maintained at the distributors, stockiest and retailers. It also keeps a track of demand fluctuations in the market. Below distributors company has stockiest in each city which helps in distributing products to retailers like chemists and other provision stores. * It has an open culture where there is a good relation between employer and employee and also they (employees) are free to give any suggestions to the employer. Such an open culture has helped to establish dedicated workforce of around 110 people with a very low turnover. Also the pay-scale is much more then industry standards and company also gives performance based increment which motivates an employee to be more productive. * Company is receptive to the customers and accepts feedback and complaints from them and for this it has started a helpline. In this if customer has any complaint for instance if the product is not working effectively, company asks them to send their address and bottle to the company and in return they send them 2 bottles of Kayam churna which results in customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. Kayam churna is an ayurvedic product which is made of 7 selected herbs and being an ayurvedic product it has no side-effects. 2. Weakness * An attractive packaging is very essential to sell any product but packaging of Kayam Churna is very traditional in looks which might drive away a prospective customer to buy it. * Demand for the product is huge compared to what the supply is; this is because of capacity constraints. Many a times K ayam churna is not available to customers at retail stores like chemists and mom and pop stores leaving the customer dissatisfied. Company has limited funds and it has budget constraints and because of this company is not able to do aggressive marketing compared to the competitors like Zandu and Emami which produces other laxatives like Nityam Churna and Good Morning Churna respectively. * Many a time customers don’t believe in taking faaki (taking in powder form with water) because they prefer taking pills rather then consuming powders. 3. Opportunities * We have a huge market to be exploited around the globe because many Indians are migrating to foreign countries and they carry Kayam Churna bottles along with them because it is not available in all foreign countries. Also laxatives could be used by many people in western and Middle East countries. * Young generation doesn’t take laxatives in powder form and this market can be captured by introducing laxatives in form of pills. * These days’ people don’t have sound eating habits and they also consume junk food a lot which results in constipation and other indigestion problems and they use laxatives to cure this which gives us a huge opportunity to expand the market. . Threats * Company faces competition from players like Zandu and Emami. These players have deep pockets and because of this they can market their product aggressively and because of these they can also indulge themselves in price wars which could be catastrophic to company’s product. There are many indigenous players who sell laxatives and they have also proved to be major competitors. For Eg. People in South India trust these local vaids (doctors practicing Ayurveda) and buy laxatives from them. * Duplication is another major threat for Kayam Churna. RESULTS – URBAN 35 % of the respondents did not show any appreciation for the idea of introducing Kayamchurna in a tablet form. They had their own reasons for the refusal. Some of them were not among those who prefer ayurvedic medicines and showed interest only in allopathic medicine. Some were people who said they would rather consult a doctor before taking any medicine. 65 % of the respondents appreciated our idea of introducing Kayamchurna tablet. Such a major % of the small sample supported our idea further. Although this is a very small sample to be examined when we talk about a product like Kayamchurna, yet, being in the youth age group, we ourselves also know about probable reasons why people avoid ayurvedic medicine like Kayamchurna. Normally the youth finds uncomfortable to take medicines in Churna (powder) form. However the tablet will remove this defect. RESULTS – RURAL 45% of the respondents did not show any appreciation for the idea of introducing Kayam Churna in a tablet form. They mainly find powder form comfortable than their urban counterparts. Some of them were not using any medicines for constipation and related problems. While 55% of the respondents appreciated the idea of introducing Kayam Churna tablet. As more than 40% sales come from rural market it is very important for the company to design its marketing strategy accordingly. Efficient distribution network is the backbone of each marketing campaign. If product doesn’t reach to the target market, there is no relevance of spending huge amount on advertisements and promotional activity. So, availability of the product is utmost important. At present company is having 20 distributors in different states of the country who distribute to the stockiest than some stockiest distribute to the wholesalers and some stockiest distribute directly to the retailers. Currently company has 935 stockiest across the country. Normally company appoints a stockiest in every town population exceeding 1 lac. Now in extreme rural area company doesn’t have any distribution center. The retailers from such area get our product from the nearby town as per the demand in their village. RURAL MARKETING OF THE COMPANY ADVERTISEMENT Both print media and electronic media are being used by the company. Firm is concentrating on print media as it is more effective for the nature of the business and products and it also concentrates on wall paintings for advertising in rural markets which forms a huge share of the total sales. Company advertises in regular intervals that are most appropriate and cost effective. And there are several versions of firm’s advertisements. We give advertisements according to region and target audience. In India we give advertisement almost in all major languages and concepts of advertisement are also different for different group of people. Currently company is dealing with two advertisement agencies; one based in Rajkot and another in Mumbai. The main functions of agencies are to create new creative ideas and prepare advertisement for us. And they are the intermediaries between the company and all media. All advertisements are released through these agencies and media planning is also done by them. Company spends considerable amount in Doordarshan and Radio to reach remotest place in the country. This is because still there are lacs of people who are not connected to the cable and have no access to the electricity. So Doordarshan is the best medium to communicate with those people who do not have cable and radio is the best option to reach to the people who do not have access to electricity and where electricity cut offs are frequent. Company has also put up hoardings on the highways which connects many villages in many states in the local language. SALES PROMOTION Company gives various promotional schemes to its distributors to boost up the sales of the products. Company gives 4 bottles free with every 96 bottles purchased of a particular product. Company also gives 10 free bottles of its new product with purchase of every 100 bottles of Kayam Churna to promote and make the new product available in the market. Company has set standards for every distributor. They are being awarded if they exceed their standards. Holiday packages are also given on achieving certain benchmark set by the company. CONSUMER BEHAVIOR Rural consumer is all together different from the urban consumer. Their need, preference, lifestyle, priority, spending pattern, income and knowledge about the product are very different from their urban counterparts. Rural people are very price sensitive and they want value for money. One interesting thing is that they are very loyal to the brand they use. They would never switch to other brands easily. I would like to quote one rural guy whom I met during my field work. He said, â€Å"if ‘Kayam Churna’ is not available in the store in my village, I go to buy it for my mother from nearby town which is 15 Kms away and I also buy it for my neighbours. † This shows that they are very loyal to whatever brand they are using. The store man asked him to buy a similar product, but he refused to buy it. Many of the rural consumers are illiterate, they don’t know how to read and write. They identify the product only by the color, shape of the bottle and font of the letters. One retailer during the field study told me that many times people from nearby village come with the empty ‘Kayam Churna’ bottle and asks for it. They do it because they want the same product. They can’t read and write so they have fear of getting cheated. Cases are verbal representation of reality. Real business situations involve uncertainty and don’t present selected and sorted information. ? A case must have 3 characteristics: 1) a significant real world business issue or issues 2) Sufficient information on which to base conclusions 3) No stated conclusions 12 ? Many cases have these complicating properties: 1) Information that includes â€Å"Noise†- false, irrelevant†¦ testimony by characters in the case 2) Unstated information that must be inferred from the information that is stated 3) Nonlinear structure 13 ? A well-written case must have these characteristics. Reader of the case must be able to: 1) Construct conclusion from the information in the text 2) Filter out irrelevant portions of the text. 3) Furnish missing information through inferences. 4) Associate evidence from different parts of the case and integrate it into a conclusion. 14 ? Noise is a characteristic of real situations. Today, we are flooded in information, much of it of little value. Every case, whether it has a large amount of information or very little, requires the reader to make inferences. This can be the most difficult transition from textbooks and lectures. ? If memorization is the primary skill of the lecture model, inference is the primary skill of the case model. Furthermore, cases do not have a linear structure and are not presented in the most logical way. ? 15 ? There are 3 possible approaches to reading the case: 1) Receive it 2) Find it 3) Make it (appropriate for cases) ? â€Å"Receive it† states both subject and its significance (fits a text such as news story) â€Å"Find it† states keys and clues to find the solution (fits a text such as mystery novel) On the first reading of the case, it can seem to be a whole that is less than the sum of its parts. Indeed, the most basic matters of fact are not clearly stated or are stated in multiple ways. Students have to read a case actively (Active Reading) and construct their own meaning based on pedagogical objectives of the case and the theories and concepts already discussed in the class. 16 ? ? ? A case is a text that refuses to explain itself; hence, a meaning needs to be constructed for it. To analyze a case, the contextual factors concerning it must first be studied in order to allow a deeper understanding of the case (Situational analysis) Contextual information helps to limit and narrow the analysis of the case. Courses are often divided up into different modules or themes defined by certain types of situations and, often, concepts, theories, and practices appropriate for these situations. Students should learn how to make a case with relevant information based on the objectives of the case or questions already given by the instructor. 18 ? ? ? The method of analyzing a text is heuristic, meaning that important aspects of the situation in which the case is set must be identified and understood. This is a term used for self-guided learning that employs analysis to help draw conclusions about a situation. 19 ? Analysis has two closely related definitions: to break something up into its constituent parts; and to study the relationships of the parts to the whole. To analyze a case, you therefore need ways of identifying and understanding important aspects of a situation and what they mean to the overall situation. ? Thinking about a case must start before you begin making it. This way, the different questions arising about the case can be answered during the reading process. For example, the framework of a certain concept may guide a product launch decision. Hence, specialized methods are advantageous in achieving well-defined purposes. 20 21 22. 23 The following will provide a starting point for further understanding the different aspects of analyzing a case: ? There are four types of situations which appear repeatedly in case: †º Problems †º Decisions †º Evaluations †º Rules (complicated for beginners) 24 ? The definition of â€Å"problem† as a case situation is quite specific, unlike its other suggestions. Problem is a situation in which there is a significant outcome or performance, and there is no explicit explanation of the outcome or the performance. A problem in a case study is when the outcome or performance is significant yet there is no clear explanation of why it has happened. The causes of these outcomes are important to know so that the situation can be improved. ? 25 ? The outcomes of the cases may be negative. This is as a result of the fact that the change effort of the manager may be self-destructive. This result may arise from weaknesses that are unapparent. For efficient problem analysis, the problem first has to be defined. This is where success can come to be seen as a problem, in its own special meaning. ? ? Next, the problem must be explained by linking the outcome or performance to its root causes. Specialized methods of business disciplines are needed as tools to carry out this analysis. 26 ? Problem analysis begins with a definition of the problem. That seems obvious, yet many cases do not state a problem. As a result, you will first need to realize that a problem does exist. After this, you must define it yourself. Next, you must work out an explanation of the problem. This can be done by linking the outcome or performance to its root causes. This is the main work of problem analysis. To carry it out, you will need to employ the relevant tools, the specialized methods of business disciplines such as Strategy or SCM or operations management. 27 ? An executive must decide whether to launch a product, move a plant, pursue a merger, or provide financing for a planned expansion. ? 29 ? Analyzing a decision requires the following, regardless of the dimensions of a decision: †º Decision options †º Decision criteria †º Relevant evidence ? The decision options are often mentioned in the case itself. A stated decision needs to be followed by a statement of the alternative decision options. Finding these or coming up with them can be set as the first goal of the analysis. 30 ? In making a rational decision, the appropriate criteria need to be determined. By thoroughly studying the specifics of the case with the help of specialized methods, the criteria can be derived from the case, as they are not likely to be directly stated. The criteria are then used to develop evidence so as to complete a decision analysis. The decision must be the best option between the evidence and criteria available. In decision analysis, no decision is objectively correct. The goal is to find a decision that creates more benefits than the alternatives, as well as having less severe downsides. 31 ? ? â€Å"If we are to continue outsourcing, and even consider expanding it, why should we keep paying someone else to do what we can do for ourselves? † what are the stimuli behind such a statement to reflect on eBay customer support decision? 32 ? In an evaluation, a judgment is expressed about the worth, value, or effectiveness of a performance, act, or outcome. An outcome can be the subject of an assessment. The competitive position of a company, for instance, is the outcome of numerous decisions and performances as well as contingencies such as macroeconomic conditions. 33 ? Evaluations require appropriate criteria for setting the standards for assessing worth, value, or effectiveness. These criteria can be inferred from the particulars of a situation, with the aid of specialized methods. An overall evaluation will express the best option between the evidence and the criteria. Another requirement of an evaluation is that it includes both positive and negative aspects. Both strengths and weaknesses require analyzing. ? ? 34 ? 1. The opening or end of a case may present partial or complete descriptions of the problem as well as expressing a tension or conflict vital to the analysis. 40 Knowing the situation allows you to ask questions pertinent to a problem, a decision, or an evaluation. Hence, the stages previously stated can develop the needed understanding to ask the questions in this second phase. Making a content inventory of the case, to locate information that might be used to answer the questions about the situation, can be useful. 41 †º Problem – Who or what is the subject of the problem? What is the problem? Am I trying to account for a failure, a success, or something more ambiguous? What is the significance of the problem to the subject? Who is responsible for the problem and what might he need to know to do something about it? †º Decision – What are the decision options? Do any seem particularly strong or weak? What is at stake of the decision? What are the possible criteria? What might the most important criteria be for this kind of decision? Are any of the criteria explicitly discussed in the case? †º Evaluation – Who or what is being evaluated? Who is responsible for the evaluation? What is at stake? What are the possible criteria? What might the possible criteria be for this sort of evaluation? Are any of the criteria explicitly discussed in the case? 42 ? Instructor may decide to provide situation guidelines and questions regarding the case study for students: 1) Situation 2) Questions 3) Hypothesis 4) Proof and action 5) Alternatives 43. This is the most important phase while working on the case. This involves narrowing the possibilities to the one that seems most plausible. There are different aspects to take into consideration, depending on if you are dealing with a problem, a decision, or an evaluation. Recording your thought process can help the development of this stage. 44 ? Make sure you know the problem that needs to be diagnosed. Consider whether the characteristics of the problem suggest causes. Think about the frameworks that seem most appropriate to the situation. Quickly review the specifics of the frameworks if you are not certain about them. Pursue the diagnosis by looking at case information through the lens of the cause you are most certain about. For each cause, make a separate pass through the case looking for evidence of it. If the case has a lot of quantitative evidence, to what case is it most relevant? If you do not have a case relevant to the quantitative evidence, formulate one. Work up as much relevant, high-value quantitative evidence as you can. In a case with a protagonist (central character), consider whether she is a potential cause. If you think she is, work out how she contributes to the problem. Work up as much relevant, high-value quantitative evidence as you can. If there are conflicts about the decision between individuals or groups, think about why it is. Look at the decision from the point of view of each of the parties to the conflict. If the protagonist is in a difficult position in relation to the decision, consider why that is. 47 48 49 ? Kelvin Yee 10/21/12 Skyline College English 110 Paper #2 Acceptance: Chinese & American Born Chinese Perspectives in Poetry The United States is a place where people can have diverging views on how to describe the diverse nation. The country in fact does not have an official language because of the myriad of distinct ethnicities residing within the country. With all this diversity it is only natural for people to struggle with which cultural norm to follow. Of the many immigrants that have journeyed to the U. S. or a better life, Chinese immigrants perhaps have been discriminated against the most because at one point they were considered an alien incapable of assimilating which lead to laws preventing their immigration and naturalization during our nation’s not too distant history. From a Chinese perspective, appearance is everything and by default that means acceptance as well. Chinese immigrants often will develop opposing personas since the United States is predominantly an individualistic society whereas Chinese society is predominantly a collectivist culture.This imbalance in values has caused some Asian-Americans to become baffled over how to discover their true identity. While achieving acceptance while balancing multiple identities is not an easy feat to accomplish, authors Kitty Tsui and Laureen Mar have used poetry in similar and dissimilar ways to support people who are endeavoring to navigate through diverse and conflicting identities, through their poems: A Chinese Banquet and My Mother; Who Came From China, Where She Never Saw Snow. Both authors are activists that use poetry as well as other literary mediums to reach a broader audience.Tsui was born in Hong Kong and she is a lesbian with a loving partner so she is very familiar with longing for acceptance since she is a minority within a minority. Mar is of Chinese descent born in the United States at a time when discrimination against Chinese and Asians in general was still vastly prevalen t throughout the nation. The two authors use their intellect to enlighten as many people as they are able to reach with their literary works. The protagonist in Tsui’s poem is arguably modeled after her where she is striving to be accepted for being gay by her family.The protagonist attempts to come out to her mother â€Å"but she will not listen, she shakes her head. † (Tsui 613) This avoidance can become very problematic due to the conflicting societal teachings and will only perpetuate the alienation. When there is disapproval in Chinese families often a distance will start to build as children and parents start alienating one another. This largely stems from Chinese children being taught not to question authority while Western society is teaching almost the exact opposite.The main character in Mar’s poem is a Chinese immigrant mother that succumbs to a cycle of monotonous despair without even realizing it. The mother appears to be content doing the same job day in and day out for relatively low wages as she has been sewing sleeves onto ski jackets over and over again for twenty four years. She must work to support her family and because â€Å"she earns money by each piece, on a good day, thirty dollars† (Mar 533), thirty dollars that could easily be ten if she slows the pace.Being an immigrant with limited knowledge of the English language, she is not left with many options in terms of rising above her socioeconomic class but she cannot afford to slow down to take English lessons. Like many immigrants the mother gets caught in a catch 22 and over time loses sight of the goal of providing a better future for her and her family after all, she could have stayed in China to do this job. Both poems emphasize the struggles that someone goes through while both being and feeling like an outsider which only illustrates how important it is to bring conflicting viewpoints into equilibrium.Tsui’s poem illustrates the narrator grappli ng with her own persona as well as the persona her family would like her to portray. In contrast the struggle in Mar’s poem is about the inner workings of the intricate interactions between society and the immigrant population in America. These issues are deeply philosophical as there are many cultural dimensions rooted within them. These two distinguished poets have gone to great lengths to not only alert us to mounting issues in our society but they give us a map to navigate these turbulent waters as well.The struggles presented in the poems are not merely that of being an outsider because they have a fervent underlying clash of cultures that exists within them. Take Tsui’s poem for example, she asserts that you should allow your individuality to shine through but at the same time be respectful of the differing societal views. The first evidence of this notion is established early on in her poem where the reader discovers the narrator’s individuality flourishi ng in the form of fashion because the reader is specifically informed that the narrator is dressed differently from the rest of the female attendees of the family function.The narrator could have easily chosen to cause a raucous or simply refuse to attend the family function because her partner was not welcome at the event. Instead of pursuing either of these two scenarios she attends and â€Å"[sucks] on shrimp and squab† (Tsui 613) minding her own business while daydreaming of acceptance. This decision is very significant because the narrator demonstrates that she is still able to be respectful of the traditions of her family and culture while still allowing her individuality to thrive as much as possible given the circumstances.Through all of this she is still very conscious of not only her perceived image but her family’s image as well. In contrast Mar’s poem proclaims that you should not go against tradition in the slightest bit, but instead encourages peop le to follow tradition with one key factor to keep in mind; do not overwork yourself until you lose sight of why you are working so hard in the first place. Chinese society places great value in a strong work ethic but the mother keeps working without questioning authority, also something Chinese society teaches, which can be viewed as either a positive or negative Chinese trait to have.The mother ends up being overworked with a seemingly low prospect of climbing to a higher socioeconomic class without even realizing the disparity in the working conditions compared to the typical working conditions of native born Americans. Mar points out that many immigrants get taken advantage of because they are unfamiliar with what is proper and what is downright unscrupulous in hopes of Chinese immigrants realizing that virtues that are prized in Chinese culture may become a point of exploitation in cultures with dissimilar values.Not only have these renowned poets given us instruments to aid u s as we traverse challenging obstacles in multicultural lives, but they have done it in such manner that a reader of the poem can’t help but marvel at how they have used certain literary tools to reiterate their point without creating a feeling of alienation. Throughout both poems, both poets have given us subtle clues that are not immediately apparent but after careful reflection provide the reader with a revelation about the society that we live in.Tsui’s use of repetition is meant to have the reader believe that the family function is fairly casual despite initial evidence to the contrary. Very early on the speaker in the poem uses an oxymoron stating that â€Å"it was not a very formal affair but all the women over twelve wore long gowns and a corsage, except for me. † (Tsui 612) Clearly the event itself was a formal affair; otherwise the women over twelve would not have been in long gowns with a corsage. They could have simply been in a casual dress or pant s for that matter. It was not a very formal affair† is repeated several times during the course of the poem in an attempt to create a feeling of casualness. This casualness is a key concept that is further developed by the lack of punctuation in the entirety of the poem. Making the poem have a casual atmosphere is yet another way to show respect while still inserting individuality because she is able to soothe a stressful topic. For traditional Chinese families having a gay child is a very serious matter.In general Chinese society value sons more than daughters because the sons will continue the family name and it is assumed that sons will care for the parents in their old age. Since multiple cultures are working against Tsui it is only natural that she would endeavor to frame the issue in a softened manner. She points this out as not only a remedy for coming out but also as a guide to manage any tense situation in which there is are significant disadvantages. Mar utilizes a l iterary device known as enjambment to aid in emphasizing the irony in her poem.By having her thoughts flow in a continuous manner the reader does not have an opportunity to immediately pick up on the irony since there is no break between her thoughts. This writing style allows suspense of the poet’s point to build up, creating an epiphany upon reflection of the poem at the end. This style of writing allows the author to blend thoughts together that individually would not be very substantial but when combined, form a very profound and thought provoking literary work.Had Mar chosen to use an alternate style of writing she would have likely had to delve much deeper in her selection of words in order to convey her point with such an impact. Most rational people regardless of their cultural background would choose to portray their mother in a positive light. The narrator of Mar’s poem describes her mother as having hair as â€Å"coarse and wiry, [and] black as burnt scrub. † (Mar 532) No one would intentionally depict their mother in such a horrible fashion unless there was something amiss however; the little details like this are not immediately processed with the enjambment.Further analysis reveals additional evidence to suggest something is irrational. All the Chinese dialects are tonal languages like most Asian languages. Due to the pronouncing of certain tones in many Chinese dialects, many Westerners have viewed some of the dialects as being harsh and abrasive when in fact from the perspective of a native speaker, the dialogue is nothing more than a normal conversation. Mar specifically choses to have the narrator, a native speaker, describe Toisan Wah, a Chinese dialect, as being harsh.Obviously this suggests that there is some dissatisfaction of the current situation just as the fact that the mother has immigrated to America for twenty four years, but the speaker in the poem specifically points out that English is the mother’s se cond language suggests additional discontent. After twenty four years it shouldn’t be necessary to explicitly communicate this detail despite being a fact. On the surface of these two poems a reader can get wealth of information to guide through balancing multiple diverging identities but it is perhaps after careful analysis that you can appreciate the true implications of the poems.Both Tsui and Mar are activists but being that they come from a Chinese cultural background, though slightly differing views, they know how to express their opinions without being overbearing. Chinese culture is a high-context society meaning that there is a lot of emphasis put on the meanings of not what is said but rather what is implied whether it is in the form of writing style or nonverbal cues during physical interactions. A considerable wealth of knowledge can be lost without delving deeper to read in between the lines of our intricately elaborate network of intertwined cultures.With global ization and acculturation happening at an increasingly unwavering rate, these two poets have prompted us to take heed not to lose sight of our culture, the very essence of our identities, in a robust but diplomatic approach to gain acceptance.
